You can see it before you now: the hill. Stumpy and unimposing, it’s barely worth recognizing as battlefield terrain. From its summit, a dwarf could gain a somewhat unobstructed viewpoint for nearly a quarter-mile in some directions.
But wait! You’re not alone at this hill—in fact, three enemy armies are already converging on this same worthless piece of land. In an instant, the tactical insignificance of the hill couldn’t matter less. There’s only one thing on the minds of your warriors now: charging headlong into the enemy formation, cutting down your foes, and creating a scene of war like never seen before! It’s time to make some Kharnage.
Kharnage is a card game of frenzied battles and unforgiving fantasy warfare for two to four players. Each round, you and your opponents will bring new forces to the battlefield, then use those forces to beat the living daylights out of your enemies. With four unique factions—Dwarves, Goblins, Humans, and Orcs—featuring four different playstyles, every game of Kharnage feels completely different. And no matter which faction you play, your goal is the same: to cause more damage and wreak more havoc than any other player!
Plan for Battle
Every round of the game begins in the same way. You and your opponents consider the strategy cards available to you, deciding which one best suits your current situation and secretly selecting the one that you will use for this round. Then, once every player has chosen, you’ll all reveal your strategy cards.
In many ways, these strategy cards determine exactly what you can accomplish on your turn. Every strategy card has an initiative number in the upper left-hand corner. These numbers decide the order in which you and your fellow players will take their turns, from lowest to highest. Considering whether you want to strike first or save your strength until the end of the round is a key consideration during your games of Kharnage.
Your strategy card also tells you how many additional forces will join your army that round. Every strategy card features a number of reinforcement symbols, and on your turn, you’ll reveal an equal number of new units and add them to your army, slotting them into your battle lines in the appropriate places. Bringing new recruits in and growing your army is obviously important, but during a game of Kharnage, that’s not really what interests you. You’re interested in slaughtering as many of your opponents as you possibly can!
Strategy cards are revealed at the beginning of the round, and battle begins almost immediately afterward. Players take turns in the order determined by your strategy card’s initiative, and on your turn, you have the chance to sound the charge and slam directly into your opponents’ armies with your full strength. Every new unit that joins your army features a number of attack symbols, which you can use to destroy enemy units in melee attacks and ranged attacks.
Your forces are arranged in lines in front of the hill, charging towards your enemies!
Just as your strategy card determines how many new warriors join your army, they also dictate which attacks you can make on your turn. Every strategy card features a number of attack symbols below your reinforcements, allowing you to make melee attacks, ranged attacks, or both. Resolving these attacks is your path to victory—after all, it’s your only chance to crush the skulls of your foes and walk away from the battlefield as the king of carnage!
When resolving an attack, you simply count up all of the matching attack symbols from the units in your army. The total number of these symbols gives you an attack strength, which you’ll then use to crush enemy units! Every unit has a defense listed in the upper right-hand corner of its card, facing the enemy, and you’ll need to spend that many attack points in order to destroy that unit. The more units you destroy, the more points you earn—with bonuses for completely vanquishing another player’s forces. There’s only one metric for victory in Kharnage: if you’ve destroyed more enemy units than any other player. At the end of four rounds of battle, only one player can stand at the top of this strategically worthless hill.
An attack strength of seven is enough to destroy the entire front line of the Dwarf army!
Charge Into Battle
With four unique factions, unique ranges of strategy cards, and plenty of special abilities for your units to use in battle, there’s no way to know how any game will play out. Lead your armies onto the battlefield and slay as many foes as you can in every game of Kharnage!
